This project aims to better understand the social impacts of the transition to net-zero in the steel and mining industries, and the role of sustainability systems in guiding good practice towards a socially responsible transition.
Decarbonisation of the steel and mining industries will generate massive changes technologically, geographically, economically, and socially. For example, newer low-emissions technologies to make iron and steel are likely to require far fewer operators than traditionally is the case and use new value chains to source more suitable input materials, and clean sources of energy. Sustainability systems can play a role in reducing the social impacts of the transition in these industries, and protecting those most vulnerable.
This project will seek a deeper understanding of the issues, map how standards are addressing these globally, identify where critical gaps exist, and establish the opportunities for future work.
