This project will improve standard-setting and auditing tools to better ensure that they are rights-based.
The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) makes clear Indigenous Peoples’ right to free, prior, informed consent (FPIC) – consent they may grant, withhold, or withdraw related to projects or activities that impact their lands and resources. FPIC, however, has rarely been achieved in the mining context.
The project will improve standard-setting and auditing by increasing expectations for credible FPIC processes, increasing guidance and training for auditors and mining companies, and providing tools to both support and connect value for Indigenous rights where mining happens. The intention is to ensure that where increased extraction and processing of minerals is needed to meet climate goals, Indigenous rights and broader human rights are at the fore of how responsible practices are measured.
