This project aims to empower local communities affected by aquaculture operations to better protect their rights and interests.
Complex social dynamics exist between companies and people living with and around aquaculture farms. In Sri Lanka, where this project focuses, the aquaculture industry is expanding – creating a range of social and environmental risks.
Sustainability systems can help to change the power imbalances at play, supporting companies to meaningfully engage communities, and building the capacity of communities to advocate for themselves and influence the industry practices that influence their lives.
Through a co-design process, involving dialogues between communities and aquaculture companies, this project will develop practical tools for environmental monitoring by communities that can be applied in different contexts.
