Defining a living wage

The Global Living Wage Coalition (GLWC) brings together a number of sustainability systems united by the common goal of improving workers’ conditions, including wage levels, in the farms, factories and supply chains participating in their systems. The coalition wants to see all workers, in certified operations and beyond, receive a wage that provides for a decent standard of living for their families. To support this aim, the GLWC has worked with living wage experts Richard Anker and Martha Anker to develop a consistent methodology for calculating a living wage in different countries.

Sharing knowledge

The GLWC received a grant from the Innovations Fund to develop a web portal to share knowledge and information on living wage levels, and to promote collaboration and tools for putting living wages into practice. The user-friendly platform contains:

an interactive map, where users can easily find information on living wage benchmarks in different countries and regions
country-specific pages detailing living wages, costs of living and supporting information
tools and resources such as webinars and case studies, including links to useful external resources
a forum for sharing implementation strategies and lessons learnt.

The Anker Reference Value method is an important development for living wage and income work globally, allowing NGO's, companies, trade unions, and other stakeholders to understand wage and income gaps in many more countries and regions and start working to reduce them.
